MANILA (PNA) —Members of two baking associations will increase prices of loaf bread by P2 and pandesal by P1 effective on Monday, Feb. 8, after prices of bread ingredients rose significantly.
Walter Co, president of the Philippine Baking Association (Philbaking), speaking at the Balitaan sa Tinapayan news forum held in Sampaloc, Manila on Sunday, said the Philbaking and Philippine Federation of Bakery Association Inc. (PFBAI) had to implement price adjustment to cope with the expenses needed in making bread.
“The member-baking companies of the two associations have incurred huge loses due to increases of prices of sugar, flour, water, oil and other ingredients for making bread so we have no choice but to implement price adjustment,” he said.
Co said the price of loaf bread, which weighs 600 grams will increase by P2 while the price of pandesal pack containing 10 pieces will increase by P1.
“Since the prices of loaf bread and pandesal are different in bakeries so we have to come up with a formula which is to increase the price by P2 from the current price of their (bakers) respective prices of loaf and pandesal and we cannot increase more than P2. Then as to the pandesal, it is P1 increase per pandesal pack,” he said.
He said that after the onslaught of typhoon Ondoy last September, the price of sugar rose by P19 per kilo. Currently the price of sugar is between P50 to P55, per kilo.
Lucito Chavez, vice president ng Philippine Federation of Bakery Association Inc. (PFBAI), said bakers had no choice but to increase (prices) to survive. “Actually, it is okay for us to have small profits but we cannot afford to incur huge loses because it will result to closure of our business,” he said.
Chavez said once the prices of ingredients for making bread decrease, the bakers would also immediately implement rollback.
