SSP to hold annual gab Aug
18-20 at Marco Polo Hotel

The Stroke Society of the Philippines (SSP) will hold its 11th SSP Annual Convention on August 18 to 20 at the Marco Polo Hotel in Davao City.

Overall chairperson Alejandro Baroque II, M.D. said this year’s theme is “Harmonizing Strategies in Stroke: from Bench to Bedside to Backyard”.

“We are expecting approximately 500 delegates composed mainly of physicians as well as members of the allied medical profession to participate in this convention,” Dr. Baroque said. He said the president of the Stroke Society of the Philippines is Dr. Jose Navarro; he is expected to grace the upcoming event.

As part of the program, there will be a pre-convention activity for barangay/rural health workers and midwives about “Stroke Prevention in the Community” to be held at Southern Philippines Medical Center (formerly Davao Medical Center) with workshop directors Dr. Meldi Anuta and Dr. Arnold Pineda on August 18

On the same day will also be a pre-convention activity for nurses entitled “Nursing Care in Stroke” at the same venue with workshop directors Liza Floresca,R.N,M.A.N. and Dr. Annabelle Lao.

Another pre-convention activity for emergency medical services will also take place on August 18 which is entitled “Emergency Medical Services in Acute Stroke” by workshop director Dr. Rene Lopez at SPMC while Dr. Manolete Guerrero will be the workshop director during the physical rehabilitation pre-convention activity entitled “Applying Current Neuroplasticity Principles into a Task and Context Specific Exercise Program” to be held at San Pedro Hospital on the same day too.

During the main convention on August 19 and 20 this will all be held at Marco Polo Hotel.

Among the topics to be discussed during the first day at the said venue include “Acute Stroke Management” with session chair Dr. Roy Barcinas, “Secondary Stroke Prevention” with session chair Dr. Vincent De Guzman, and session chair Dr. Anatole Garcia will handle the session time for “Advances in Stroke Neuro-imaging”.

During the second day will be a neurosurgery session on stroke in the elderly with panelists Dr. Manuel Mariano, Dr. Peter Rivera and Dr. Rhoderick Casis. Session chair Dr. Ester Bitanga will handle the topic entitled “New Definition for Cerebrovascular Diseases – Is it Ready for Implementation?”, “Recovery After Stroke” by session chair Dr. Maricar Yumul, and “Evaluation of Stroke Patients for Clearance” which is to be taken cared by session chair Dr. Arnold Pineda.

Business meeting and fellowship night will take place after all the said sessions.
