A military intelligence officer was shot dead by two motorcycle-riding gunmen in Barangay Lasang, Davao City, before dawn yesterday.
Bunawan police identified the victim as Corporal Benjie Hopayan, a member of the 10th Military Intelligence Battalion of the Philippine Army and a resident of Asuncion, Davao del Norte.
Police said Hopayan was driving his motorcycle home at around 4 a.m. on March 17 when two men shot him repeatedly as he passed through Lasang.
The victim died on the spot with six bullet wounds. The assailants hurriedly escaped after the attack.
Police are blaming the New People’s Army (NPA) for the killing.

Laborer hurt in stabbing
A 31-year-old laborer was seriously injured after being stabbed by a 25-year-old tricycle driver in Barangay 5-A Bankerohan, Davao City.
San Pedro police identified the victim as Peter Paul Francisco and the suspect as Ronald Villaren.
Police said the victim was talking to a friend at around 8:30 p.m. on March 15 when the suspect suddenly arrived and stabbed him repeatedly.
The victim was rushed to the nearest hospital for treatment.
The suspect, for his part, hurriedly escaped after the incident. |
